Which is, of course, one way we know they were never actually last at all.
This one is "last best"--a bit of pseudo-literary flair that's almost always inaccurate...to the extent that it even makes sense. But technically it could also be used in the future to deny that this was actually a last last chance--but just a "last best" one.
