Asshat or no, getting time for being in the area is guilt by association. It's a terrible idea. And 70 years for misdemeanor property damage (at the individual level, less than than $2000 per person) is definitely cruel and unusual. It's creeping tyranny, the kind of thing that makes rioting *reasonable*, damn Jeff Sessions to hell.
There was a group who were actively conspiring to shut down the DC Metro system. My guess is the ones who had the book thrown at them are related to it and Al-Jazeera is just looking the other way, but obviously I could be wrong. Other possibility: they are inflating a basically infinitesimal sentencing possibility to gain sympathy.
