Two things:
1) Yeah, I don't think that these kind of draconian measures are necessarily effective.
2) But, correlation, causation, yadda yadda

I do call this causation. Criminals do not want their victims to be armed. If you ensure that law abiding citizens don't have a way to defend themselves of course crime will go up.
But correlation of the right kind is a helluvan indicator of causation...
