(b) Any guesses as to what will happen if it does?

At the risk of stating the obvious as if it weren't:

I'm going to guess: 

(i) A sudden revision of standards for what counts as an epidemic.

or

(ii) The sudden development of a new term for not-quite-epidemics.

or

(iii) A spate of "expert" op-eds scolding us (i.e.: non-progressives) for obsessing about the term / concept 'epidemic' / epidemic.

e.g.: WHY IS DONALD TRUMP SO OBSESSED WITH WHETHER COVID-19 IS AN EPIDEMIC???
