If this madness were emanating from the right, faculty everywhere would be deploying torches and pitchforks... But it's emanating from roughly the left...so...don't hold your breath on that pitchfork thing...

Yep, I saw that.
Here are words more college students need to learn--as I've said to my classes before, in one of my rare bouts of giving life advice:
"Don't presume to tell me what to do."
or just:
"Don't tell me what to do."
I've also suggested:
"Go to hell."
I have no doubt that Clemson had a good goal in mind here. But good ends aren't always enough.
I worry that my students are docile and easily manipulated, especially when certain kinds of laudable ends are mentioned.
They need to be more cantankerous.
Then need to learn to, as we used to say, question authority...
It is sometimes hard to determine what to fight and what to live with.
I'm not saying people shouldn't refuse to comply with Clemson's survey request, but I understand when people go along with such garbage. Being of finite resources, one's choice of battles is bound to sometimes appear idiotic to others. It might not be docility that you witness, but strategy.
Or it could be mindless, sheeplike docility.
