Aside from Toles' predictable Bush snark, a new Iraq constitution that assigns second-class status to women re divorce rights per shari'a is indeed troubling.

But what do we do? Isn't self-determination the underlying principle of democracy, consent of the governed? What if all the men and half the women are cool with this?

Do we still attempt to exercise a cultural imperialism, "knowing" that the emancipation of women is inherently just?

Nothing ever comes easy. Damn. Thanks for introducing me to fallibilism, WS, the question of how to proceed in the absence of moral certainty. Moral dilemmas truly suck.

I hear ya, brother. Welcome to my world.

This is why I thought that we should aim for liberal (in the broad sense) government in the ME first, and democracy later...

Anyway, I'd strip the "scare quotes" off of 'know'. Seems to me that we know that the emancipation of women is inherently just...and I'll be you agree.
